Under the Rotunda

(Donald)

It’s already Friday
And soon it’ll be Friday night
And if you’ve got something planned
I suppose I’ll understand
But give me half an hour
And I’ll meet you in the gardens
I’ll probably be waiting under the rotunda if it’s raining
And somewhere near the see-saws if it’s not

We can wander round the football ground
As the sun sets on the grandstand
If it gets a little cold there
We can hold hands in the goal square
It’s getting dark and baby don’t the shops shine bright
I’ve been here for hours
I can’t see the florist for the flowers
And I can’t see the point in hanging around

I know we’ve done all this before
But once more won’t hurt
So let’s do it once more
Bereft of ideas
We live here but we’re sightseers

Somewhere over the railway line
There’s a light on in your loungeroom
Do you remember when I found you fast asleep?
You were so slow to your feet
I didn’t mean to yell
It’s just that I’m a little jealous
‘Cause you can do the Rubik’s Cube and I can’t

I relied on blind faith and dumb luck
But eventually the stickers came unstuck

I know we’ve done all this before
But once more won’t hurt
So let’s do it once more
Bereft of ideas
We live here but we’re sightseers

Guess How Much I Love You
(Donald)

Good Friday and I’m miles away
And missing you already
From a backyard in Balmain
To the post office and back again
I bought a postcard
I’m getting close
But I haven’t got around to it yet
I know I said I’d write
And maybe I might

You know I’m thinking of you
In the bookstore, in the laundromat
Guess how much I love you
Much more, more than that
More than that

Better Saturday
It’s been that way since I spoke to you this morning
From a pay-phone in a pub
Here’s the rock’n’roll and there’s the rub
And when I spoke to you
You said ‘I’ll see you soon’
But I won’t see you for ages
And your voice sounded so small
The loneliness of the long distance phone call

You know I’m thinking of you
In the bookstore, in the laundromat
Guess how much I love you
Much more, more than that
Guess how much I love you
More than that

Here’s me
Here’s you
Draw a line between the two
This is cartography for beginners
On a map the gap’s three fingers
But it’s more than that
It’s more than that

Fridge Magnet Song
(Donald)

It’s funny I feel like I felt before

Late at night on the kitchen floor

Staring at the wonderful words on the fridge

Wondering what you meant by your message

It’s funny I haven’t noticed for a while

My next door neighbour has the nicest smile

If I remember her name I’ll never forget her

I’m spelling it out with colourful letters

You and me equals we

It’s just as simple as A B C D E F G

It’s funny I feel like I felt last night

If I dream another plane crash

I swear I’ll book a flight

But home is where the heartache is

At least that’s what you wrote on the front of the fridge

You and me equals we

It’s just as simple as pi r squared

To the power of

3... You and me

4... You and Eleanor

5... You and Clive

6... You and Beatrix

7... You and Kevin

8... You and Kate

9... You and Brian

10... You and my best friend!

It’s funny I feel I was meant to exist

Late at night reading the shopping list

My next door neighbour smiling from afar

And home is where the cornflakes are

You and me equals we

It’s just as simple as A B C D E F G H I J K L M N O P !

The Golden Age of Aviation

(Donald)

For argument’s sake let’s pretend we could stop arguing
Over which of us is wrong and why it isn’t you
We’re barely awake before your head’s up in the clouds again
There’s nothing you like more than having nothing much to do

Stood akimbo
Staring out the window at the sky

All afternoon you’ve been buried in a biography
Of an aviatrix lost at sea, never to be found
Holed up in your room, holding out for an apology
But gravity will get to you eventually

You’ll come down from upstairs again
With all those model aeroplanes

And the novelty wore off
When the pilots still wore goggles
But your eyes look skywards
And your mind still boggles

I’m going grey but you look younger than a year ago
When you put your hair in pigtails and you put your hand in mine
We’ll be OK - I’m happy when you’re here
But oh, your smile can seem as far away as once upon a time

You can’t help it
Hopelessly nostalgic

A passing interest in the past
But I think it’s going to last a little longer
I’ll hold on to your hand as tightly as I can
But modelling glue is stronger

The novelty wore off
When the pilots still wore goggles
But your eyes look skywards
And your mind still boggles
Through frequent flyers’ disappointments and disasters
The golden age of aviation never lost its lustre

 ie. eg. etc
(Monnone)

Here comes the blow-in again
Blowing kisses from the doorway
Don’t just stand there, let him in
We want to hear some of his stories

We’re the people that he knows
When there’s nowhere else to go
When it’s four am and pouring rain outside
We’re his tonight

Tell me your troubles again
Tell me whom you can relate to
I’d like it if we could become closer friends
In fact I can barely wait to see you again
Just say when
Well you know that I’ll be waiting here ’til then

We’re the people that he knows
When there’s nowhere else to go
When it’s four am and pouring rain outside
We’re his tonight

That is
For example
Etcetera

Punchlines

(Donald)

I must admit I find it funny
But I might have known she’d find it dumb
The air hostess and the blow-up dummy
I’m in stitches and she’s twiddling her thumbs
She hasn’t laughed once

She thinks there’s something wrong with my sense of humour
And I think there’s something wrong with hers
Once upon a time she was easily amused
But now I think that joke might be getting worse
It was funny at first

I’m overjoyed when she understands
I could make her chuckle if she gave me half a chance
But the most she ever gives me is a second glance
She never gets a kick out of my punchlines

I saw her smiling during Gilligan’s Island
I suspect sarcastically
Despite myself, I’m beside myself
My sides are splitting but so is she
She’s laughing at me

I’m overjoyed when she understands
I could make her chuckle if she gave me half a chance
But the most she ever gives me is a second glance
She only ever gets a kick out of my punchlines
Sometimes

Give me half a chance....

Smokers In Love

(Donald)

In the early morning, when you wake each other up
Coughing like you might not make the afternoon
You keep the curtains closed and you carry off a conversation
But you both know that it’s still far too soon to say you’ll be OK

La la la la la

You keep the curtains closed and you hide behind the newspaper
You got yourself some nicotine in the nick of time
And even though the weekend doesn’t really make much difference
You spent Thursday on your backside whistling “Friday On My Mind”
Super-supine

La la la la la
Smokers in love

Happy and hungover on the first day of October
Struggling to remember the last night of September

In the early evening, then you crack each other up
Laughing ’til you’re practically bent double on the floor
Amidst a sea of empty bottles, crockery and coffee cups
Using anything for ashtrays, drinking drinks you can’t afford
And you’re still bored

La la la la la
Smokers in love
